Student Wins National Award!

A pupil from Kearsley Academy is a winner of the MS Society's 2018 Young Carer award, a fantastic achievement.

Zaynab was one of just three young carers from around the UK to be recognised with the accolade at the society's annual awards ceremony in London on Friday, 27 April.

After nominating her daughter, a proud Mum praised Zaynab's willingness to always go the extra mile, and pointed out her equally impressive academic performance.

"Whilst looking after me she also looks after her little brother who is 12, and is studying hard doing her GCSEs this year.

"Recently she was awarded pupil of the week at school, out of 600 pupils. I'm so proud of her!"

MS Society chief executive Michelle Mitchell added: "Our three young carer finalists have all achieved so much, and at such a young age, that we couldn't separate them with one outright winner.

"We're very proud of Zaynab and she absolutely deserves this recognition."

Fresh from scooping the award, the Kearsley Academy pupil was thankful of the recognition and noted the benefit of talking to other young carers.

She said: "I am absolutely over the moon! It means a lot to me because I've never been recognised before. Not everyone knows what a young carer does, so it's amazing to get this recognition.

"I've really enjoyed meeting other young carers here today because hearing their stories, I've realised they're so similar to mine."

MS is a condition suffered by over 100,000 people in the UK. The MS Society has a free helpline on 0808 800 8000 and more information can be found at
